Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation

Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation (MKMTF) focuses on the preservation and conservation of sea turtles particularly the critically endangered giant leatherback turtle along with other turtle species.

Although Mai Khao Beach is one of the few beaches in Phuket that welcome nesting turtles, eggs are also collected from other beaches that are deemed to not have a natural and peaceful environment. The eggs collected are given to the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC) and the Royal Thai Navy and then to the turtle sanctuary at Mai Khao, which provides a home before the turtles can be released into the sea.

Annual programmes and activities include: Marine Turtle Rehabilitaion shelter & Education Centre at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa; visiting schools programme to the Marine Turtle Rehabilitaion Shelter and Education Centre; Mai Khao Turtle Fun Run and Mini Marathon; turtle releases at JW Marriott and Anantara Layan Villas; annual donation programme for Matine Turtle Conserevation Program to Phuket Marine Biology Centre; Department of National Parks and Royal Thai Navy activities and events; wetland and mangrove integrated management plan with IUCN including mangrove plantings; beach and reef conservation activities with Prince of Songkla University; anuual 'Ride for the Turtles; from JW Marriot Phuket to JW Marriott Khao Lak.

Opened in 2002, the Fund has enlarged its sphere and programs. Not only does it rescue and shelter turtles, it undertakes environmental efforts to ensure their conservation and to preserve the environment. The Fund involves local communities, schools, universities, government organizations and other NGO's to promote awareness and lend assistance. Other initiavtives and its supporters include an integrated coastal management plan with its partner the International Union for the Conservation of Nature that include beach and reef cleaning, educational workshops, recycling projects, mangrove tree planting, turtle rescue/release and support of other marine conservation organizations.

Funds are raised for the foundation by its members and partners. JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, Marriott Vacation Club International and Anantara Hotels and Resorts ensure a sizable annual donation to Marine Conservation Units which ensures many projects such as the Nesting Beach Patrols & Hatchery Program including the Marine Animal Stranding Rescue Project to help bring awareness of turtle protection and encourage the participation of all stakeholders to preserve our natural surroundings.
